Below are the policies for Samse Studios drum lessons. These policies are intended to ensure that we all understand our responsibilities, how payments work, schedule changes and what is expected in order to get the most out of the learning experience. Please review these policies. When you register for lessons, we will ask you to sign a copy indicating that you have reviewed and approved the policies. We look forward to seeing you and getting started on this musical journey.
The teacher will provide weekly private lessons to the student, to which he will be punctual and prepared. The teacher is in attendance at this weekly lesson whether or not the student is. The teacher will provide advice and expertise at any time it is required regarding the purchase of any drumset, equipment, or other percussion instrument. When a student / family has purchased a new drumset, the teacher will schedule a time, at his and the family’s convenience, to tune and set up the set. There is no fee for this service.
Tuition will be billed quarterly, payable by the first lesson of the quarter. (See studio schedule for quarter start / end dates and holidays / vacations.) Each student must commit to one regular lesson time each week. Tuition amount is based on the number of lesson days occurring in the quarter, regardless of whether the student will be present at all lessons. Lessons may also be billed on a monthly, or individual basis. However, the per-lesson rate will be higher for each of these options, respectively. No regular lesson time will be reserved for students scheduling lessons individually.
Summer lessons may be scheduled on an individual basis, based on the student’s availability. (These will be billed at the regular quarterly rate as long as the teacher is notified of absences by the start of the quarter. Students wishing to take the summer off will not have their time / day held.) Summer is an excellent time to make rapid progress. A second lesson in the same week during summer is eligible for a 25% discount.
Lesson Attendance / Punctuality / Preparedness
Students are expected to arrive on time to lessons, and to have their sticks and books at each lesson. Regular attendance is of utmost importance. Students must prepare their lesson assignments thoroughly each week. The general recommendation for practice is approximately 30 minutes per day, although individual exceptions to this may exist for temporary periods of time. Parents are requested to remain in consistent communication with the teacher on this subject. Students who are often ill-prepared for their lesson will be given a probation period, with full disclosure to parents, and if no improvement is made, will be asked to discontinue lessons.
In the event the teacher must cancel lessons (illness, the illness of a child, etc.), students will be notified by email or text as soon as possible. If a make-up cannot be arranged that is suitable to both the teacher and the student / parent, the lesson will be credited to the account.
Missed Lesson / Make-up Policy—Student
The following supersedes the previous policies with regard to lessons missed by the student. Policies regarding lessons cancelled on behalf of the teacher, as well as all other policies, will remain the same as in the general Lesson Policy agreement.
- Two make-ups are allowed per quarter.
- 24 hours’ notice is required to cancel a lesson, except in the case of sudden illness.
- Please do not contact the teacher to cancel or reschedule a lesson (except in the case of sudden illness with less than 24 hours’ notice). Cancel and schedule a make-up by logging into your My Music Staff portal.
- In the event of sudden illness, please notify the teacher by text as soon as possible. The teacher will then cancel your lesson and issue a make-up credit. You must then register for a make-up by logging into your My Music Staff portal.
- Make-ups will expire at the end of the quarter in which they are issued.
- For individually scheduled lessons, 24 hours’ notice must be given to cancel, or the lesson must be paid for.
- The teacher may, at her/his discretion, issue extra lesson credits, or extend the period to use a credit, for hardship situations, such as extended illness or family emergency.
- The teacher will endeavor to keep one or two make-up spots open each week. However, this depends to a large degree on availability. There is no guarantee that a make-up will be available on the time, day, or location that you prefer. The teacher is under no obligation to extend his or her work hours, or come in on an extra day to accommodate a make-up.
Missed Lessons—Inclement Weather
Lessons may be cancelled due to inclement weather. This will usually be done when the Lake Washington School District cancels school. Exceptions to this will occur if the weather changes late in the day. You will be notified as soon as possible in all weather-related cancellation cases. If it is, or may be snowing, please check email before coming to your lesson. Again, lessons missed due to weather will either be made up, or credited to the following month or quarter.
Drumset or Practice Pad / Books / Materials
Students are required to have a quality practice pad and sticks of appropriate size, as recommended by the teacher (and, if applicable, drumset), in working order, appropriate to the level of player. A metronome and music stand are required for home practice. Books and music will be recommended by the teacher, and should be purchased promptly.
Fifteen days written notice is required to discontinue lessons. Partial tuition may be refunded, for what remains of the quarter following the 15-day notification period. Students are assumed to re-enroll for the upcoming quarter unless written notification is received. If tuition has not yet been paid for an upcoming quarter, any lessons falling prior to the end of the 15-day notification period must be paid for.

*For students whose Mid-winter or Spring Break do not correspond to the Lake Washington School District, they may choose to take off their own break week, and schedule an alternate lesson on another week, either before or after the break.
