Meet Eric Samse, aka Mr. Sticks
Why Private Lessons?
Private lessons are truly important in every child’s musical education. School bands are an important resource, but cannot address every need a budding musician has. Percussion, in particular, is a highly specialized focus, and often overlooked in a crowded classroom full of other, very different, types of instruments.
In order to keep the spark of interest alive, every drum and percussion player needs some individual attention from a specialist in the field. Eric Samse, with his extensive experience as an educator, player and performer, regularly teaches aspiring young drummers to maximize their potential as musicians. Enroll your child (or yourself!) in lessons today!
Eric provides each student with a comfortable and enthusiastic environment in which to learn and grow as a drummer. The basics—proper stick and mallet technique, stick control, rudiments, tempo, posture and muscle development techniques—are stressed first and most importantly. Eric also covers the musicality of drumming, dynamics and finesse. These make the difference between a drummer and a complete musician. Students are also encouraged to play with CDs of their favorite music. Drumming should always be fun and motivating!

"I would've given up playing because I just couldn't read sheet music. But my first lesson I ever had with [Eric] I walked out of the practice room feeling invincible to any music that was thrown at me...The first fill [he] ever taught me gave me so much joy and I wanted to learn more and become amazing...."
"[Eric] helped give [my son] confidence in himself that will carry him throughout his entire life. [Eric's] warmth, humor and talent fit him perfectly."

"Finding a good drum teacher is easy. Finding an excellent drum teach not so, however, for our family the choice was made an easy one. In his 4th year of band at Evergreen Middle School our 13 year old son was asking for a private drum teacher to improve his already established skills. Without reservation his well respected band teacher, Mr. Peterson, recommended Mr. Samse. I called him as I had called a few others before. It was the last call I made. “What makes Mr. Samse an excellent teacher?” I asked our son. “He makes me feel welcome”. “I am one of his last students of the day and never feel that he has no energy left for me”. “He challenges me”. “He does not give up on me. Instead he works with me until I get it”. “He is strict, but has a good sense of humor”. As a busy family, we find ourselves having a conflict here and there. It has never been a problem to call and reschedule a lesson. Thank you, Mr. Samse, we are glad to have found you!"
"[Eric is] terrific with [my son]--he responds so well to [Eric] and we appreciate how flexible [he is] with him as well as all the energy and effort [he is] putting into his lessons."
"Our son has been enjoying weekly drum lessons with Eric Samse since January 2010, first for 30 minutes then a full hour. We’ve watched our son develop so much during this time including his passion for music and his percussion skills and also his personal confidence and self-esteem. His percussion skills have enabled him to participate in his high school rock band for the past two years which he really enjoys and gives him the opportunity to flex his drum muscles and perform in front of live audiences. Our son is on the high end of the Autism spectrum and sometimes lacks flexibility. This never fazed Eric. He adjusted his teaching style to fit our son. Eric let our son take the lead through his exploration of music, knowing when to encourage and when to give a little nudge. Our son spent one full summer repeating one beat, when suddenly he wanted to move on. Eric began expanding his repertoire weekly. And they continue to grow. Eric just waited it out and guided our son when he was ready. Our whole family greatly appreciates the relationship our son shares with Eric: the comradery, the instruction, the exploration of a variety of music, the personal development beyond music and making the whole thing fun every time."
"Our son, Adarsh has been learning to play the drums from Eric for the last 2yrs. Adarsh enjoys his sessions with Eric and looks forward to his class every week. Even though Eric follows a structured curriculum, he makes it fun for the kids by making them play the beats to some of their favorite songs. Overall it's been a great experience for Adarsh to learn from Eric."
